Mika has announced his first album in four years, inaugurating his return with a new single.

The singer revealed on Friday that his album My Name Is Michael Holbrook (a partial reference to his full name, Michael Holbrook Penniman Jr) is slated to be released on 4 October.

On the same day, he unveiled a new song titled “Ice Cream” – a catchy summer tune in line with the colourful pop that turned Mika into a sensation with the 2007 hit Life in Cartoon Motion.

The song, Mika said in an Instagram post, “was written on a day of extreme heat in August”.

He crafted it over the last few weeks of a two-year writing period for his new album.

“Through the writing I had confronted personal, serious and at times painful issues. By the end of it I felt lighter and freer. This was one of the last songs written for the new album,” he added.

“The song is a daydream fantasy. Like a heat mirage, and makes me feel like anything is possible.”

The singer will begin a European tour on 10 November in London.
