Naomi Campbell stars in video for Anohni's anguished new single Drone Bomb Me
"It's a love song from the perspective of a girl in Afghanistan," says Anohni
Anohni, the artist formerly known as Antony and the Johnsons, has shared her new single 'Drone Bomb Me' and its striking video starring supermodel Naomi Campbell.
Like Anohni's previous single '4 Degrees', which tackled the issue of climate change, 'Drone Bomb Me' is a sleek electro track with a serious message.
"It's a love song from the perspective of a girl in Afghanistan - say a nine-year-old girl whose family's been killed by a drone bomb," Anohni explained on Annie Mac's BBC Radio 1 show last night.
"She is kind of looking up at the sky and she's gotten herself to a place where she just wants to be killed by a drone bomb too."
During the interview, Anohni rightly described the track's accompanying video as "insanely beautiful". Directed by Frank Ocean and Kanye West collaborator Nabil, it shows tears streaming down the supermodel's face as she lip-syncs to 'Drone Bomb Me''s anguished lyrics.
Both '4 Degrees' and 'Drone Bomb Me' will feature on Anohni's forthcoming album Hopelessness, due on 6 May, which has been co-produced by Hudson Mohawke and Oneohtrix Point Never.
Anohni announced shortly before this year's Oscars that she would be boycotting the awards ceremony because she was not asked to perform her nominated song, 'Manta Ray', a collaboration with the composer J Ralph. That nomination made Anohni the first ever transgender performer to be shortlisted for an Academy Award.
