Oscars 2016 nominations: The films we want to see recognised from Room and The Revenant to Mad Max: Fury Road

Our predictions based on who we want to see earn nods are in, and there's a few more 'out there' suggestions

As Hollywood’s finest await the outcome of the Oscars nominations announcement, it’s time to consider who we hope that Academy will plump for this year.

The Revenant, Spotlight and Bridge of Spies are strong frontrunners for gongs but there are a number of outliers we want to take home little gold men at the ceremony on Sunday 28 February.

Alicia Vikander deserves a double nod for Ex Machina and The Danish Girl, while Idris Elba’s fearsome turn in Beasts of Nation, Rooney Mara’s beautifully understated performance in Carol and Charlize Theron’s serious ass-kicking in Mad Max: Fury Road should also be recognised.

Carol, The Big Short and The Revenant are among our favourite movies from the past year, with Mad Max: Fury Road and Room also getting lots of love from the team.

Alejandro G Inarritu looks set to take Best Director for The Revenant but our fingers are firmly crossed that Todd Haynes gets a look in for Carol.
