Robert Smith says The Cure are releasing a new album in 2019

Musician announced the news during an interview about the band's induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

The Cure frontman Robert Smith has announced that the iconic band will release their 13th full length album next year.

Smith appeared on New York radio show SiriusXM to discuss The Cure’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where he confirmed the news. It will be their first record since 2008’s 4:13 Dream.

The Cure are among seven acts to be added next year, alongside: Stevie Nicks, Radiohead, Janet Jackson, Def Leppard, Roxy Music and The Zombies.

Smith spoke about how the nomination, combined with the artists involved in his curation of 2018's Meltdown festival, motivated him to finish the new record. He had previously stated in July this year that the goth legends had begun work on new material.

“Primarily because of the Meltdown thing, seeing all these new bands inspired me to do something new,” Smith explained. “We’re going in about six weeks time to finish up what will be our first album in more than a decade. It’s very exciting times for us all around.”

The Cure have announced an extensive string of festival slots for next summer, including Madrid’s Mad Cool festival, Glasgow Summer Sessions and Denmark’s Roskilde festival. The announcement of the new album suggests that fans are likely to be treated to performances of new material at those shows.
