The five-year-old son of Grammy-winning R&B singer Usher has been hospitalised after nearly drowning in an Atlanta swimming pool.

Usher Raymond V fell to the bottom of a domestic swimming pool in downtown Atlanta and became stuck in the drain on Monday, according to Atlanta police spokesman Carlos Campos.

A housekeeper tried to get to the boy, but was unable to free him from the drain, the police statement said.

Two electricians working nearby were called to help and the boy was eventually pulled from the pool and given CPR by one of the men at the scene.

Campos said the boy was "conscious, alert and breathing" when paramedics arrived before 4pm. He has been taken to the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Scottish Rite.

The five-year-old is one of Usher's two sons from his relationship with Tameka Foster, who he divorced in 2009 after two years together.

The singer was engaged in a lengthy legal fight with his ex-wife and was awarded primary custody of his two sons last year.

The near drowning of Usher's son comes less than a year after Foster's 11-year-old son, Kile Glover, died after being critically injured in a boating accident. The boy, who was the stepson of Usher, was run over by a personal watercraft on Lake Lanier northeast of Atlanta.
