A woman has died and 19 people were injured after an advertising tower outside a Linkin Park concert collapsed in strong winds last night.

Fans were waiting for the gig to begin at a stadium in Cape Town, South Africa when the accident occurred.

Linkin Park published a statement on their website expressing “deep sadness and concern for those injured and heartfelt condolences to the family of the fan who died as a result of her injuries” .

The band did not hear about the accident until after the concert had gone ahead.

In their statement Linkin Park revealed that the advertising tower which blew over had been erected by Lucozade and was located in the parking area outside the Green Point Stadium.

“Though we have had no relationship with the sponsor or the entity responsible for erecting the structure, we take the safety of our fans very seriously and our thoughts are with all of those who were affected by this tragedy,” the statement continued.

A spokeswoman for GlaxoSmithKline, the makers of Lucozade, said the company was "deeply saddened" by the accident and extending "sincere condolences to the family of the bereaved".

She said the company is "in close contact with the concert organisers and investigating authorities and will cooperate fully with them in their investigations".
