Album: Enrico Rava, Rava On The Dance Floor (ECM)
Unaware of Michael Jackson until his death, veteran avant-garde trumpeter Rava then developed an obsession, especially for the later, naff albums.
"I felt the need to delve more deeply into Michael's world," he writes on the sleeve to this live recording. "There was only one way to do that: play his songs." Half of it is really good. The band is funky, the arrangements interesting and Rava in fine form. "Speechless", "Thriller" and Chaplin's "Smile" are stand-outs.
