Album: Laura Mvula, Sing to the Moon (Sony)

The debut album from Laura Mvula isn't just proof that there is life to Brit-soul beyond Sandé (bloody Sandé). The 25-year-old graduated from the Birmingham Conservatoire, and you can hear every inch of that training in her compositions. Drawing on anything from medieval plainsong to free jazz, she creates an extraordinary sensation of light, air and space. I'm getting the feeling this might be the soundtrack of the summer.
