Red Dead Redemption 2 news and release date: Sequel rumoured to be unveiled at E3 for 2017

Along with an HD remake of the original

One of the longest-craved video games, Red Dead Redemption 2, might finally be on its way.

Gaming site FragHero cites a source claiming to have information from an ex-Rockstar Games employee who says the game, called Red Dead Redemption 2: Legends Of The West, has quietly been in development for four years and will come out in autumn 2017.

The rumour goes that the sequel will be announced at E3 in June and will have more than one playable character (last time round it was just John Marston) and a much bigger open world map.

The source also claims an HD remake of Red Dead Redemption for next-gen consoles is in development, which would make sense given the (deserved) fondness for the original.

This should all be taken with a vat of salt of course, and I really hope ‘Legends of the West’ is just a working title, but its exciting nonetheless.

Take-Two has previously stated that Red Dead is very much still on its radar before, with CEO Strauss Zelnick saying:

'I pretty much know the ones that I can assure you are permanent. It’s obvious that GTA is a permanent franchise as long as we keep delivering this incredible quality; it seems quite obvious that Red Dead is a permanent franchise, again with the same caveat, or Borderlands, for example, and NBA and others.'

In other long-awaited game news, the signs are positive for a Portal 3.
