Hit stage show Riverdance is to make a comeback to the UK for the first time in four years with a theatre and arena tour to mark its 20th anniversary.

The Irish dancing phenomenon, which has been a huge hit around the world, will visit 16 venues next year.

It launched a "farewell" tour of the UK in 2009 but will return in September of next year.

The fancy footwork first captured the public's imagination when it was showcased at the Eurovision Song Contest staged in Dublin in 1994.

Producer Moya Doherty said: "The success of Riverdance across the whole world has gone beyond our wildest dreams.

"The fact that the show continues to draw and excite audiences is a tribute to every dancer, singer, musician, staff and crew member who have dedicated themselves to the show.

"This 20th anniversary tour is a thank you to our UK audiences and a celebration of what has been an incredible journey across two decades."

The tour begins at Southend Cliffs Pavilion on September 2, and goes on to visit Ipswich, Bournemouth, Birmingham, Cardiff, Bristol, Manchester, Bradford, Blackpool, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Sunderland, Nottingham, Oxford, Southampton, and finishes at London's Hammersmith Apollo.

Riverdance has been seen by more than 2.9 million people in the UK.
