Emmy speeches: Enough with 'baby daddy'. How about 'husband'?
Sporting a sensational mustard-coloured Lanvin gown, a pregnant Claire Danes walked onstage to collect the award for outstanding lead actress in a drama series at the Emmys.
With a reputation for being smarter than your average actress (Danes dropped out of a psychology degree at Yale University to concentrate on acting), it was dispiriting to hear the Homeland star, after paying tribute to the cast and crew of the show, refer to her actor husband Hugh Dancy as "my husband, my love, my life, my baby daddy".
This comes just a few months after James Corden called his then-fiancée (now wife) Julia, his "baby mama", in his speech after winning the best actor gong at the Tony Awards. Can someone tell them that the original meaning of baby mama or daddy is hardly complimentary (it tends to allude to relationships of a more love 'em and leave 'em kind – just take a look at the Urban Dictionary) and it would probably be wiser to refer to their partners in a more conventional manner?
