Game of Thrones season 8: Lena Headey had 'mixed' feelings about Cersei's big episode 5 moment

The latest instalment has had a similar response from fans

Lena Headey has revealed she initially had mixed feelings about the outcome of Game of Thrones‘ penultimate episode.

The latest episode saw Cersei defeated by Daenerys Targaryen who burnt King’s Landing to the ground – even after Lannister forces surrendered to her. The scenes were witnessed in terror by Tyrion, Arya and Jon Snow, but also by Cersei from high up in the Red Keep.

The character watched on in tears as thousands of innocent civilians were murdered by Daenerys in scenes fans believe were “humanising” the villain. After attempting to escape, she finds her brother and lover Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) who takes her to the Red Keep’s cellar – only the exits are blocked by rubble.

The pair die in each other’s arms as the building collapses in on them, debunking a long-running prophecy.

Headey told Entertainment Weekly that she was originally “mixed” on her death scene because she “...wanted her to have some big piece or fight with somebody.”

However, the British star says she finally came around to the idea of the scene after long chats with Coster-Waldau.

“The more we talked about it the more it seemed like the perfect end for her. They came into the world together and now they leave together.”

Recalling the scene, she said: “It’s maybe the first time that Cersei has been at peace.”

Headey’s co-star Conleth Hill, who plays lord Varys, has spoken candidly about his disappointment with being sidelined over the past few seasons. His character also met his demise in the penultimate instalment alongside The Mountain (who finally unmasked for Cleganebowl) and all of these individuals.
