There’s a lot of excitement surrounding American Horror Story: Hotel - not least of all because it will be the first in the series to interconnect with other seasons.

One of the most intriguing aspects is Lady Gaga’s return to acting, having last had a brief role in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. The pop icon will be playing a bloodthirsty Hotel owner in the upcoming FX show and has since detailed the struggles her character will deal with.

Speaking about the role with The Hollywood Reporter, she said: “There is a journey for my character, in particular, through haemophilia and her need to drink blood to survive and to stay young, and that’s entwined with other stories about a need for sex, a need for freedom, a need for drugs, a need for attention, a need to survive.

“What’s interesting about this season is that you see the dichotomy of the two worlds: You have the hotel world, which feels decidedly like [show creator] Ryan Murphy's world, and then you have the outside world.

“It’s addiction as the public sees it versus how it really is and how that all plays into each other.”

Numerous other characters will also deal with addiction. Max Greenfield - Schmidt from New Girl - plays a heroin addled character who meets a creepy, wax encased man who lurks around the hotel.

"You can see how it sort of looms over the hotel," he said. "There’s a lot of scenes that metaphorically show the pull and the weight that an addiction has over a human being.”

Sarah Pulson and Matt Bomer’s characters also carry the heavy baggage of addiction, Poulson saying: “The way that we can all be addicts in different ways that are detrimental to our health is a big part of this season, whether it be love addictions, sex addictions, drugs addictions, alcohol addictions.”

Finn Wittrock, who previously starred in American Horror Story: Freak Show, said how Murphy was “obsessed with Gaga,” so much so that she’s reinvigorated the show.

“She’s just basically his muse. They text all the time. They’re always talking and exchanging emails and her ideas, so he’s definitely reinvigorated. I think the show is really trying to shed its skin and reinvent itself this year.”

American Horror Story: Hotel debut’s 7 October on FX.
