Avengers: Endgame has vastly outsold its predecessor Infinity War during its first week of online presales in the US.

Fandango, one of the main American platforms selling tickets online, announced on Wednesday that the forthcoming Marvel film has sold five times as many tickets as Infinity War did in the same period.

According to Fandango, “thousands” of Endgame showings have already sold out across the US, 16 days ahead of the blockbuster’s release.

Endgame, which comes out on 26 April in the US and 25 April in the UK, now holds the record for the biggest first week and first day of presales.

The previous record holder was Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which came out in 2015.

“I wouldn’t be surprised to see a record amount of fans reporting sick to work or taking the day off on Friday, 26 April because they’ll be attending opening day screenings of Avengers: Endgame,” Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis told The Independent in a statement.

Earlier this week, throughout Monday and Tuesday, Avengers: Endgame outsold every film currently showing on Fandango.

Promotion is currently ramping up ahead of the release of Endgame, which will wrap up the saga that started in 2012 with the first Avengers movie.

The first excerpt from the film, a one-minute clip, was unveiled by Marvel on Monday. It shows the remaining Avengers, including Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, discussing possible strategies to bring back those who succumbed to Thanos’s infamous snap, which wiped out half of the galaxy in Infinity War.
