Two teaser clips for Broadchurch series two have aired on ITV ahead of the hit crime drama's hotly-anticipated return.

Shown during The X Factor results show on Sunday night, the 20-second trailers give little away bar a glimpse of stormy seas, an unspecified coastline and mysterious phrase "The end is where it begins".

David Tennant and Olivia Colman are confirmed to reprise their lead roles as detectives Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller, alongside fellow returning actors Andrew Buchan, Jodie Whittaker and Arthur Darvill.

New cast members for the second run will include Charlotte Rampling, Meera Syal, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, James D'Arcy and Eve Myles.

A return date is yet to be announced and details of writer Chris Chibnall's next storyline are being kept tightly under wraps. It is expected to air in early 2015.

Last year's award-winning series followed the high profile murder investigation into the death 11-year-old Danny Latimer in a small Dorset town. More than 10 million viewers tuned in to see the killer’s identity revealed in a climatic finale.

The new teasers suggest that series two will pick up where the last ended, at Danny's emotional funeral. Named 'Part 1 of 3' and 'Part 2 of 3', a third teaser is yet to be revealed.

A recent US remake of Broadchurch, entitled Gracepoint, starred Tennant in the same role, although the rest of the cast were replaced with different actors.
