Broadchurch wins two RTS awards as Olivia Colman scoops Best Actress

Broadchurch was the big winner at last night’s Royal Television Society Awards, picking up two prizes for Best Drama Serial and Best Actress.

Olivia Colman won the accolade for Best Actress for her portrayal of DS Ellie Miller in the ITV drama, joint with her performance as council estate mother Carol in Channel 4’s Run.

The actress beat fellow Broadchurch actress Jodie Whittaker and My Mad Fat Diary star Sharon Rooney to take the award.

Broadchurch writer Chris Chibnall missed out to Run screenwriters Marlon Smith and Daniel Fajemisin in the Best Drama Writer category, while BBC Two’s Peaky Blinders won Best Drama Series.

Game of Thrones won Best International Show, but its star Stephen Dillane, who was nominated for his role in The Tunnel, missed out to Idris Elba in the Best Actor category.

Channel 4’s Educating Yorkshire won Best Documentary Series, with the show’s maths teacher Michael Steer taking a swipe at education secretary Michael Gove as he accepted to award.

The Royal Television Society Awards, which took place last night at London’s Grosvenor Hotel, were voted for by a panel of industry experts.
