Bradley Walsh awards The Chase contestant £1,000 for an incorrect answer

Fans of popular quiz show The Chase are flummoxed after host Bradley Walsh gave £1,000 to a contestant for giving the “wrong answer”.

During the latest episode, contestant Aislinn was branded by Walsh as the “best young player” to appear on the show in a long time.

The 19-year-old said she was hoping to win enough money to take her mum to Monaco for the Formula One Grand Prix.

During the cash builder round, however, she was asked which food was typically paired with cheese on a stick at parties.

Aislinn immediately answered “olive”, to which Walsh said: “Wrong, it’s pineapple.”

But he then said: “However, I’m going to accept your answer of olive so that’s £7,000.”

A thrilled Aislinn responded: “Cheers, man!”

Fans posted their thoughts on Twitter, grumbling that Walsh should not have accepted the answer.

“I don’t understand why he is giving her ‘olive; – the traditional, cliché snack is cheese and pineapple, which is surely what the question was driving at…” one wrote.

“How did they accept olive? Pineapple and pickles yes but olives??” another said.

Another added: “Olive? I thought it was pineapple.”

The correct answer, of course, should have been that it is 2020, and no one should be serving cheese and pineapple on a stick at parties.

The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV
