Coronation Street bosses have apologised for a script error that saw Kevin forget about his dead son (ITV)

Coronation Street producers have apologised after a plot blunder that saw Kevin Webster appear to forget about the death of his son Jake in 2000.

In Friday’s episode of the long-running soap, Kevin, played by Michael Le Vell, told his daughter Sophie at the funeral of her girlfriend Maddie: “It must be hard burying one of you kids”, ignoring that he lost his own son 15 years ago.

In 2000, Kevin’s baby son Jake developed a Group B streptococcal infection shortly after he was born, which eventually proved fatal. His death led to Kevin’s then wife Alison committing suicide by throwing herself in front of a lorry.

Coronation Street producer Stuart Blackburn has apologised for the script error, admitting that Kevin's memory lapse was an oversight:

“I'd like to thank viewers who spotted our mistake,” he told The Sun. “Our episodes go through many drafts and are scrutinised by many people, but on this occasion we did make a mistake.”

The EastEnders cast made a number of blunders during the soap’s 30th anniversary live week in February this year.

Tanya Branning actress Jo Joyner accidentally referred to Ian Beale by the actor’s name, asking Jane Beale: “How’s Adam” in a conversation, while Max Branning appeared to fluff a crucial line about the identity of Lucy Beale’s killer.
