Introducing Jodie Whittaker as Doctor Who

The BBC has shared our very first look at Jodie Whittaker in character for Doctor Who.

She was revealed as Peter Capaldi's replacement back in July, becoming the 13th actor and first woman to play the iconic role. Other than that? It's business as usual, as Whittaker's kooky attire and yellow braces feel perfectly in tune with the show's traditions.

The actor said of her casting: "It was incredibly emotional because my entire life, as a child, all I ever wanted to be was an actor, and I wanted to do it because I wanted to play pretend, and that is the ultimate. I'm about to play an alien, a time lord. And that as a girl? Who knew? That's incredible and really emotional because of that."

Three new companions had already previously been announced: The Chase host Bradley Walsh, along with former Hollyoaks actors Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill, will join the 13th Doctor. Walsh will play the characters Graham, Cole will star as Ryan and Gill will play Yasmin.

Upcoming showrunner Chris Chibnal has revealed Doctor Who will be taking inspiration from Game of Thrones, decreasing the number of episodes while increasing the length of those episodes. As a result the series will only run for ten episodes rather than the usual 12 or 13, but the average episode length will be boosted from 45 minutes to an hour.
