Game of Thrones and The People v OJ Simpson have picked up the most Emmy Awards 2016 nominations with 23 and 22 nods respectively. Elsewhere, The Night Manager's Tom Hiddleston, Luther's Idris Elba and Sherlock: The Abominable Bride's Benedict Cumberbatch scoring acting nods for the Brits, while The Americans and Mr Robot broke through for the first time.

Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls) and a very excitable Anthony Anderson (Black-ish) presented the announcement live from Hollywood ahead of the annual ceremony, hosted this year by chat show host Jimmy Kimmel on 18 September.

The Emmy nominations are a result of TV shows putting forward various scripts and actors for accolades. Last year saw How to Get Away with Murder’s Viola Davis named the first black winner of the Outstanding Actress gong while Veep dominated the comedy field and Game of Thrones triumphed in the drama writing, directing and supporting actor categories.
