Game of Thrones’ Melisandre is the worst baby shower guest in Seth Meyers sketch

HBO allowed Game of Thrones character Melisandre to go off canon this week, with Carice can Houten taking part in a sketch on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

The set-up saw the Red Woman attending a baby shower, deviating from the usual schmaltzy congratulatory messages by saying: “Clutch your child close to your breast, woman, for the night is dark and full of terrors.”

They even snuck in a reference to the endless Jon Snow alive/dead debate, with Mel being asked if she was currently seeing anyone.

“There is someone I work with I like, his name is Jon Snow, but I’m not really sure he’s the right guy,” she says. “I’m pretty sure he’s dead…well at least that’s the way it was left.”

It’s a topical gag, given Melisandre is believeb by many to be crucial in Jon’s expected resurrection in season 6.

Probably the most interesting thing about the sketch however is seeing Melisandre actually smile, something I only just realised she hasn’t done once in Game of Thrones.

The HBO show returns for its sixth season on 24 April.
