The day of reckoning has finally arrived: will Channel 4's take on The Great British Bake Off shape up to the BBC version?

After the broadcaster bought the series for a reported £75 million back in September of last year, there's been plenty of anticipation and concern as to whether the new series can re-capture the magic, especially after the departure of Mel Giedroyc, Sue Perkins, and Mary Berry.

The first episode sees a new legion of amateur bakers take on cake week. Starting off with a "fruity signature challenge", before shifting into the technical challenge, "a children's tea party favourite", and a final challenge in the form of "the trickiest showstopper ever set in the first week of Bake Off: an illusion cake".

Critics have already given the show glowing reviews, especially heaping praise on Noel Fielding, after some vocal critics expressed concerns that he wouldn't fit in with the style of the show.

Who are the new hosts?

After former hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins stuck by their loyalty to the BBC and departed the show, Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig have since stepped up to the roles.

Channel 4 boss Jay Hunt had previously stated Fielding and Toksvig would drop the innuendo-heavy approach that Mel and Sue preferred. "The show is modern in terms of its comic take and a lot of the humour will come from Noel’s surreal twists. There are no soggy bottom jokes," she revealed at the broadcaster's annual report.

It's all part of a slight tonal overhaul of the show, with Hunt teasing: "It’s got a new tone to it; it’s got a new comic riff to it and I think that feels modern and future-facing. So it’s a show that a lot of people love but with a slight Channel 4 spin which is exactly what I hoped it would be."

Who are the judges?

Replacing Mary Berry is new judge Prue Leith, a restaurateur and cookery writer, who joins the returning Paul Hollywood.

What else has changed?

Aside from the new faces, it seems the show will pretty much stay the same as before: the format of both a signature and technical challenge, followed by a final showstopper challenge, will remain.
