Demimonde: JJ Abrams' first new TV show in 10 years to fill Game of Thrones gap on HBO

It's the Lost creator's first TV project since Fringe ended in 2013

J.J. Abrams is returning to television with a brand new series that's been picked up by HBO.

The new project from the writer-director-producer entered into a tense bidding war which was eventually won by the premium cable network who bypassed the standard pilot episode issue for a full-series order.

Demimonde - French for 'half-world' - is being described as “a sci-fi fantasy drama” following a girl who finds herself transported to another world amid a battle against a monstrous force after her mother winds up in a coma following a car crash.

The high-concept project marks Abrams' return to TV having created Felicity, Alias, Fringe and game-changing mystery drama Lost, and will fit seamlessly into HBO's schedules once ratings-puller Game of Thrones draws to a close in 2019.

Abrams also serves as executive producer on Westworld making him a huge part of the network's future in what is sure to be a crucial stage once Thrones ends. Alongside the former and Demimonde, HBO also has new shows Sharp Objects, Succession as well as returning seasons of True Detective, The Deuce and Big Little Lies

HBO's acquisition sees Abrams follow in the footsteps of Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof whose drama The Leftovers - which concluded in 2017 - is considered one of the greatest TV shows in recent memory. Lindelof is currently prepping a Watchmen adaptation for the network.

The Force Awakens director Abrams - who is producing new Cloverfield film God Particle - will return to the Star Wars franchise for Episode IX.
