Miriam Margolyes has said she sits on people on public transport if they refuse to give up their seat for her.

The actor and presenter, 78, made the revelation on ITV’s This Morning, telling Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield she has a spinal condition that makes it painful to stand up for long periods of time.

She told the hosts that once, when a man did not give her a seat, she sat on top of him.

“I did ask first,” she said. “I said, ‘Please would you let me sit down,’ and he ignored me. So I sat on him.

“He got up pretty quickly. He didn’t stay under the Margolyes for long.”

Margoyles also swore twice during the live, daytime programme.

She appeared on the show to promote her new Big Fat Adventure series, which airs on BBC2.

The programme sees Margolyes set out to find out what's being done to combat the obesity crisis and meet people who are going to extreme and sometimes controversial lengths to lose weight.
