Mr. Robot season 2 is going to be 'really f***ing dark', according to show creator Sam Esmail

Mr. Robot has yet to air in the UK, yet overseas Americans are patiently awaiting season two of the critically applauded drama.

Created by Sam Esmail - who previously directed the Justin Long starring Comet - the series follows programmer turned hacker Elliot, played by Rami Malek, as he battles depression and anxiety while joining a shady team of hacktivists called ‘fsociety’.

Films such as A Clockwork Orange, Fight Club and Blade Runner acted as major influences, leading to a dark, haunting tone that set it apart from other shows on the USA Network.

At the New York Comic-Con, Esmail spoke about the upcoming season: “Dark. It gets really f***ing dark. I mean really dark.”

While little information was given away, he hinted that the next season will give us a "precursor to how fsociety was formed.”

Cast members Malek, Carly Chaikin, Portian Doubleday, Martin Wallstrom and Christian Slater were also in attendance, with Malek adding how he had been warned it was "gonna be tough” tackling season two.

"Whoa," Malek said, according to Polygon. "You never said that to me last season.”

Chaikin, who plays Darlene, one of the fsociety hackers, said she knew very little about what’s to come. "Honestly, right now, I know as much as you guys do. I’m sitting here coming up with theories about what happens and all these things, and learning more information."

Mr. Robot will be available on Amazon Prime Instant Video from the 16 October.
