The Crown - Official Trailer

"The crown must win - must always win."

Earlier on this year, Netflix announced its most expensive TV show to date would be monarchy drama The Crown.

Based on Peter Morgan's 2013 play The Audience, the series will chart the life of Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) as she prepares to take the throne aged 25 during a fraught time for Britain - especially for Winston Churchill (John Lithgow) inside 10 Downing Street.

At first glimpse, it seems this show could tap perfectly into the void left by Downton Abbey with fans of the now-complete ITV series expecting a cosy easy watch; instead, The Crown looks set to have as much heightened drama as Game of Thrones.

Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot) will be on directing duties. Morgan previously directed 2006 film The Queen which starred Helen Mirren in Oscar-winning form.

Speaking about the series, Morgan said: "The Crown is not only about the royal family but about an empire in decline, a world in disarray and the dawn of a new era. I am beyond thrilled to be reunited with partners from film, theatre and television for this epic project and delighted to be working for the first time with Netflix."

The Crown arrives on Netflix on 4 November.
