One World: Jimmy Fallon takes swipe at Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos during charity concert
Late-night host revealed that more than $50m has been raised ahead of the One World event
Late-night host Jimmy Fallon took a swipe at Amazon founder Jeff Bezos while co-presenting the One World: Together at Home concert.
One World was organised by Lady Gaga, Global Citizen and the World Health Organisation as a “thank you” to those on the frontline in the battle against coronavirus.
Fallon presented the second part of the event, along with fellow late-night hosts Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert.
During the opening skit of the second part, it was revealed that more than $50m had been raised ahead of the event.
“And half of that was shaking Jeff Bezos for loose change,” Fallon joked.
The Guardian reported this week that Bezos has grown his vast fortune by a further $24bn so far during the coronavirus pandemic, marking a 20 per cent increase over the last four months to a total of around $138b.
Bezos owns an 11 per cent stake in Amazon and has been the world’s richest person since 2017.
A surge in demand has driven the business to near peak holiday season levels, with the public on partial lockdown apart from those considered key workers.
The One World concert saw hundreds of performances and appearances from some of the planet’s biggest stars, including Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John and The Rolling Stones.
