Peaky Blinders: Series 5 - trailer

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has confirmed that a film adaptation of the show is “going to happen”.

On Monday (18 January), it was announced that the BBC drama was coming to an end after six series, but that the show’s story would continue in “another form”.

Now, speaking to Deadline, Knight has admitted that while he originally intended for the show to run for seven series – something fans had questioned when its end was announced – coronavirus meant that had to change.

“Covid changed our plans,” he told the publication. “But I can say that my plan from the beginning was to end Peaky with a movie. That is what is going to happen.”

Knight also revealed that he has been approached to turn the TV series into a ballet show and a West End musical.

In a statement announcing the show’s end, Knight revealed that production on series six had finally begun after months of delays.

“We find the family in extreme jeopardy and the stakes have never been higher,” Knight declared. “We believe this will be the best series of all and are sure that our amazing fans will love it. While the TV series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form.”

Executive producer Tommy Bulfin added: “We are very excited that filming for Peaky Blinders has begun and so grateful to everyone for all their hard work to make it happen.

“Steve’s scripts for series six are truly remarkable and provide a fitting send-off which we are sure will delight fans.”

Storylines for the sixth season remain under wraps, but Peaky Blinders director Anthony Byrne did tease last year that a “dark” female character will be introduced.
