Quiet, gentle and completely different comedian kills it on the Late Night show

'H...h..hello.'

As viewers, we’ve become accustomed to late night talk show stand-ups beginning with a ‘HELLO NEW YORK HOW YOU DOIN’!’, usually shouted, before launching immediately into a set riddled with as many jokes as possible. Well, Joe Pera breaks that mould (‘puts it gently to one side’ would probably be a more accurate metaphor).

His segment came as a palette cleanser during a recent, typically fast-paced Late Night with Seth Meyers, the comedian taking his time and using jokes sparingly.

Already notorious on the New York circuit, he has the demeanour and speaking voice of a very old and frail man, carrying himself awkwardly and never quite managing to put his hands in his pockets.

His routine builds tension beautifully, and his disposition makes any crude jokes he does make completely hilarious.

Pera’s voice is so meek and relaxing that Adult Swim recently asked him to produce a video sleep-aid:

Joe is playing shows in New York this month. Find more info here.
