Robin William is set to return to TV for the first time since appearing in 1970’s sitcom Mork & Mindy.

Williams, 62, will star in CBS’ new comedy The Crazy Ones as an eccentric advertising agency boss.

He will star alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar, who will play Williams’ straight-laced daughter.

The Mrs Doubtfire star said his new character takes chances and he hopes audiences will warm to his successes and failures, as well as his relationship with his daughter.

He said: “I think people will buy into not just my character but the relationship with everybody else. He has good ideas and bad ones.”

The Crazy Ones will mark Williams’ first major TV role since Mork & Mindy finished in 1982.

He has since carved a career for himself as a stand-up comedian and Hollywood actor, starring in Jumanji, Dead Poets Society and Flubber.

He won an Oscar in 1998 for his role in Good Will Hunting and has been nominated three other times.

David E Kelley, producer of the new sitcom, said Williams sticks to the script but is also given the freedom to improvise.

Sarah Michelle Gellar added Williams was as funny off-screen as in front of the camera.

She said: “It’s like when my three-year-old says something really inappropriate, and it’s really funny but I can’t laugh.”
