Friends movie: Co-creator Marta Kauffman reveals why it will never happen

Chat about the upcoming Friends cast reunion (the one that isn’t really a reunion at all because Chandler won’t be there) has reignited rumours of a potential movie.

But before the more gullible among you get too excited, co-creator Marta Kauffman has rubbished the idea and given a highly dubious, dare we say controversial, reason for her head shake.

“There will never be a Friends reunion movie,” she told E! News. “Friends was about that time in your life when your friends are your family and once you have a family, there’s no need anymore.”

So there you have it. It’s easier to appreciate the fact that the six cast members are wrapped up in different projects and might not be on board for bringing the hugely popular sitcom back to life eleven years later, but that spiel about no longer “needing” your friends? Pah.

NBC recently announced that Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow and Courtenay Cox will be “in the same room at the same time” for the first time in more than a decade for a tribute special to director James Burrows on 21 February.

Matt Perry’s representative has ruled him out as he is busy rehearsing for his new London play The End of Longing.

Schwimmer, who played Ross Geller, warned fans not to expect to see their favourite Nineties characters back in their Friends roles.

“It won’t be a reunion but it’ll be fun,” he said.
