Sesame Street takes on Victor Hugo in sweet-sounding Les Misérables parody

The musical has been given a muppet make-over and teaches the audience a valuable lesson

In an Oscar-worthy performance that would impress even the harshest of film critics, the Cookie Monster has taken on the lead role in a lavish production of "Les Mousserables".

That’s right - Sesame Street has created a brilliant parody of musical drama Les Misérables with the Cookie Monster starring as Jean Bon-Bon, a Parisian unwilling to give some of his favourite snacks to his friends.

The five-minute video spoofs the musical’s most famous songs including I Dreamed a Dream and On My Own, and features lyrics such as "I dreamed a dream of cream gone by" to "Do you hear the cookies crunch?" 

More importantly though, Jean Bon-Bon learns to share his cookies and respect the feelings of others, ending the skit on happy note after much biscuit-related sadness.

The video was uploaded on 7 March and has proved popular, already passing 100,000 views.

Les Misérables has been the subject of numerous parodies since a film adaptation, starring Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, was first released back in 2012.

One of the most memorable spoofs was an elaborate 13-minute video made by South Korean soldiers, garnering over 5 million view on YouTube, making it the second-biggest viral hit to come out of the Asian nation since Psy's Gangnam Style.

Sesame Street is known for its film and television parodies, most recently spoofing The Hunger Games franchise and The Life of Pi.

Although the programme is aimed at children, it has been gaining mass appeal and a new online fanbase through its fun and quirky videos. Some of the videos have also starred famous actors such as Benedict Cumberbatch and Kristen Bell.

The Sesame Street YouTube channel now has over 800,000 subscribers.
