Seth Meyers to host Emmys 2014

The late-night NBC talk show host has been chosen to head up the ceremony

Seth Meyers will host the Emmy Awards 2014, it has been confirmed.

The American comedian will host the TV awards on 25 August when the Emmys are broadcast on US channel NBC.

Meyers currently has a late-night talk show with NBC succeeding Jimmy Fallon on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

He previously served as a head writer for NBC’s flagship sketch show Saturday Night Live, on which he also appeared as a comedy actor impersonating high profile figures from John Kerry to Prince Charles.

Meyers, who won an Emmy in 2011 for Saturday Night Live, will take over from How I Met Your Mother’s Neil Patrick Harris, who hosted the ceremony last year.

Paul Telegdy, president of late-night and alternative programming, said Meyers’ “expertise in front of a live audience during his time at SNL” made him the “perfect choice” for the role.

The selection continues a recent trend of naming hosts closely associated with the channel that airs the prestigious TV awards, which unlike other major US award shows rotates each year between NBC, Fox, CBS and ABC.

Last year’s ceremony saw Breaking Bad take the top award for Best Drama Series, with Modern Family names Best Comedy Series.

Jeff Daniels won Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role in The Newsroom, while Claire Danes scooped Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her performance as the disturbed Carrie Mathison in Homeland.
