South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker have promised that the cartoon will not end with a saccharine episode tying everything together but "fizzle out", saying they will run until Comedy Central cancels the show.

The series will return for season 19 in 2015 and has been renewed for a 20th season in 2016, with no end in sight.

It is known for its hit-and-miss quality, and the creators are clearly quite amused by the idea of just making episodes until people have had enough. Here's what they had to say during an interview on IGN's Unlocked podcast:

How do you guys feel about doing the show? Do you think you’ll keep going after the current deal is up?

Parker: Every season, about three shows in, we say this should be the last season. Then we go away for a couple months and we’re like, “That was pretty good, let’s do it again.”

Have you thought about what the last episode of South Park would be?

Parker: I think it’s gonna end with a fizzle for sure. We’re gonna go, “F*ck this, man” and walk away.

Stone: Some sort of a whimper. Either drop the mic, get sued, get thrown off cable television…

Parker: We’ve thought that for 18 years, “They’re gonna cancel us for sure.” We’re waiting to get canceled for 18 f*cking years.

Stone: We won’t stop until we get canceled. We’re renewing. They have to f*cking cancel us, goddammit!

The Simpsons and Family Guy look to be heading toward a similar sort of fate over at Fox, though there's a sense the former has an obligation to give fans some sort of closure, while it's easy to imagine the latter having some sort of meta-ending about its own longevity.

Parker and Stone also said during the podcast that they'd "love" to make a Book of Mormon film at some point.
