Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah and Jimmy Kimmel lampoon Trump over State of the Union address

'Everybody who was anybody who was not indicted was there'

America's late-night hosts dined out on Donald Trump's State of the Union address last night (5 February).

“This was a long speech, a really long speech. His speech was longer than his tie,” joked Jimmy Kimmel during his opening monologue. “He spoke for so long, Robert Mueller handed down another 5 indictments.”

The host of ABC's late-night show then criticised the President's stance on immigration and his "exciting new ideas".

“For instance, did you know Mexicans are scary and we need to build a wall to keep them away?" he asked. "Trump talked more about fighting Aliens tonight than Sigourney Weaver.”

Kimmel also mocked Trump over his 10-yeard plan to combat HIV, saying: “He hates AIDS; that’s why he fires one every two weeks.”

Stephen Colbert likewise lampooned the president, saying the address was "like watching paint lie".

"The State of the Union is always a big night. Everybody who was anybody who was not indicted was there,” Colbert said.

During the 80 minute length of the speech, Trump took a shot at Democrats, calling on them to end their “ridiculous partisan investigations” or the economy will suffer.

Colbert offered a translation: “You heard me, you get the truth, or a functioning economy. Keep in mind, I turn off the government over a wall. You think I won’t burn this thing down to avoid jail?”

Trevor Noah began with a joke about Trump's crooked tie: “Trump walked past 600 people, and not a single one of them had the balls to tell him. In fact, at some point, Mike Pence was like ‘This is the way ties should be from now on.' I guess we should be grateful his fly wasn’t open.”

Noah went on to mock Trump over bringing up Rick Perry being the “designated survivor”, the person who takes over the country should the capitol be wiped out.

“That’s right, if everyone was gone, Rick Perry would have been the president of the United States, which is fine," Noah said. "He fulfills our new requirement for being president. He’s been on a reality show. It works.”
