Ever since Disney announced plans last year for a spin-off of the Nineties' coming-of-age sitcom, Boy Meets World, those with fond memories of Cory, Topanga et al have nervously awaited further details of the new show.

Called Girl Meets World, it will focus on Cory and Topanga's 13-year-old daughter, Riley, and a lead actress has just been cast. The 11-year-old Rowan Blanchard, whose credits include Spy Kids: All the Time in the World and The Back-up Plan, was discovered after a nationwide casting search.

"As soon as Rowan walked into the room, I was reminded of why Ben Savage was loved as Cory Matthews," the Boy Meets World creator, Michael Jacobs, says. The underrated original ran from 1993 to 2000, although most fans would agree that the show lost its way around the time the gang went off to college. Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel will reprise their roles as Cory and Topanga (they've already started tweeting about it) but it remains to be seen if other series favourites such as Cory's slacker best friend Shawn (Rider Strong) and handsome-but-moronic brother Eric (Will Friedle) will return as well. It is understood that Mr Feeny, the tough-but-wise principal (and Cory's neighbour) played by William Daniels, will no longer feature.

With Mr Feeny gone, young Riley can expect her daily dose of humiliation to come from her father, who is now the school's history teacher. If you were a fan of the original but this doesn't quite sound like your cup of tea, just remember it's not for you anymore. Go watch The Killing.
