Hugh Grant is set to star with Nicole Kidman in an HBO series.

The actor has been cast to play in The Undoing, an upcoming six-episode show based on Jean Hanff Korelitz's novel You Should Have Known, Deadline reported.

Kidman will appear as Grace Sachs, a New York City therapist with a successful career and blessed personal life – at least when her story begins.

Grace's life is thrown into turmoil after a violent death occurs and her husband Jonathan – who will be played by Grant – goes missing.

This causes Grace to profoundly question the state of her marriage and how much she really knows about her spouse.

Jonathan is presented at the beginning of the novel as a beloved paediatric oncologist, a caring father, and the love of his wife's life.

Grant's casting in The Undoing marks the first time the British actor is due to play a major role in a US TV show.

Grant, who starred as Jeremy Thorpe in A Very English Scandal earlier this year, has previously won a BAFTA award and a Golden Globe for his part in the 1994 romantic comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral.

He also made an acclaimed appearance as Phoenix Buchanan in Paddington 2.

Kidman, an Academy Award winner, played Celeste Wright in HBO's adaptation of Liane Moriarty's Big Little Lies, released in 2017.

She earned the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Miniseries or Television Film for her performance.
