True Detective season 2 has found its Mcconaughey and Harrelson replacements, in the perhaps surprising pairing of Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell.

Eight new episodes of the drama go into production in California in the autumn, with the new season now having an official synopsis tagline:

'Three police officers and a career criminal must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.'

Justin Lin will direct the first two episodes, with creator Nic Pizzolatto returning to write.

Vaughn is to play Frank Semyon, "a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner," while Farrell will be Ray Velcoro, "a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him."

From the snippets HBO has dished out about the season thus far, it seems to be more organised crime-based than the first season, which focused on a sadistic killer.

Further castings are expected to be announced soon, with True Detective set to return to HBO (and Sky Atlantic in the UK) in mid-2015.
