Masterchef: the Professionals 8pm BBC2

This year’s winner won’t be announced until after tomorrow night’s task, but this is the more interesting episode, as the remaining three cook for 30 of the world’s best chefs. A non-vintage year, and the lack of female chefs (probably a reflection on the profession) has been marked.

Patisserie with Michel Roux Jr 9pm & 3am BBC4

Michel Roux Jr (left) again, here transporting us to his culinary roots (“I was even named after Saint Michel, the patron saint of patissiers”) as he deplores the British taste for sticky buns. He also visits Pierre Hermé – “the Dior of desserts” – and gets upstaged by his papa, Albert Roux.

Sports Personality of the Year at 60 9pm BBC1

Christopher Chataway beat fellow runner Roger Bannister into second place in the first ever Sports Personality of the Year, in 1954. Princess Anne and Sebastian Coe are among those recalling memorable moments from the show, as Des Lynam discusses his years presenting the awards.

Lucan 9pm ITV

The sorry tale of Lord Lucan, who in 1974 disappeared after the murder of his children’s nanny, is dramatised by Jeff Pope, who wrote the Bafta-winning 2011 drama Appropriate Adult. Pope uses John Pearson’s book, The Gamblers, as his source, adopting Pearson’s radical theory about what happened to Lucan following his disappearance, as Rory Kinnear gives another fine central performance, well supported by Christopher Eccleston as zoo-keeping casino owner John Aspinall.
