Pornhub launches campaign to save the sperm whale

'We’re asking our community turn their attention to – and help save – a different type of blowhole'

If your interests include oceanic charity efforts and also pornographic videos on the Internet, well, this is gonna be a pretty big month for you.

That's because Pornhub — "the premier online destination for adult entertainment" — has launched a save-the-whales campaign, promising to donate one cent for every 2,000 video views through Feb. 29 to a nonprofit in Washington state.

"Launching in commemoration for World Whale Day on February 13, the company’s latest philanthropic endeavor will be a month-long fundraising and awareness movement dedicated to the preservation of big beautiful whales worldwide, including the endangered sperm whale which is especially dear to Pornhub," a news release on the campaign states.

Look, we all have our causes. Even Pornhub!

"Here at Pornhub, we care deeply about the environment and the preservation of wildlife,” Corey Price, Pornhub vice president, said in a statement. “We’re now asking our community turn their attention to — and help save — a different type of blowhole, one that belongs to a majestic species that once swelled in numbers throughout the oceans before commercial industries initiated their demise."

(Dang, you guys. I know this is a family newspaper, but let's just take a minute to acknowledge the fact that Pornhub really knows how to write a press release, okay?)

The campaign, announced earlier this week, benefits the Moclips Cetological Society, an organization "dedicated to saving the whales through knowledge and conservation," according to its website.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer touched base with Ken Balcomb, president of Moclips and executive director of the Moclips-founded Center for Whale Research. He … okay he was basically almost as good as a Pornhub press release.

"I thought it a fitting tribute to the charitable role of a segment of society that does not typically receive credit for its activities, or its philanthropy," he wrote to the P-I. "Given what we have now learned about the sex lives of many species of whales, they would probably chuckle over any eyebrows raised by the humans' concern for how other people live. Humans did not invent sex."

Balcomb also told the P-I that he founded Moclips "with a contribution from the owner of Apple Theater in Seattle (an adult theater)." The more you know!
