iD Mobile Deals: Pay-monthly and Sim-only Contracts

iD is a relative newbie in the mobile phone market. Launched in 2015, the provider is owned by Curry’s plc, which also owns Carphone Warehouse. With this in mind, iD Mobile deals can be found online or exclusively at Carphone Warehouse stores. Despite its recent arrival, iD has already created a stir, offering unlimited data plans as well as allowing customers to rollover their unused data. Here’s what else iD Mobile has to offer.

iD Mobile Benefits

One of the big benefits of iD is the breadth of choice: whatever amount of data you use, there’s bound to be an affordable package to suit you. You can also cap your monthly spend (outside of the plan you buy) so that you’re never hit with an unexpected bill.

If you’ve got an old handset you don’t know what to do with, you can trade it in with iD Mobile’s parent company, Curry’s. All you need to do is fill in an online form to get a quote for your phone and wait for a prepaid bag to send it off in. Send it in and, if your phone matches the condition you’ve described, you’ll get the price quoted within five days.

Another bonus is iD Mobile’s data boost. This allows you to buy extra data (up to 50GB) which is valid for 36 months. You can use this boost however you like: you can use it all in one go, dip into it as and when you need, or keep it for emergencies.

iD Mobile also offers two student discounts:

  • Unlimited data, minutes and texts for £15.
  • £10 off the upfront cost on any device if you commit to a 24-month plan.

iD Mobile also has several special offers, including:

  • Three month Apple TV+ subscription.
  • Up to five months free subscription to Apple Music, Apple Arcade and Apple news+ with selected purchases.
  • Claim a Lenovo M10 tablet when you purchase a Motorola Edge Pro.

Network Coverage

iD Mobile is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), which means they don’t operate their own phone network. Instead, they use Three’s mobile infrastructure which provides 99.8% phone coverage of the UK for 4G.

iD is currently rolling out 5G, but only across selected mobile devices, including the iPhone 12 and 13 series, Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, and the Huawei P40 and P40 Pro.

As an iD Mobile customer, you’ll also be able to access WiFi calling, which means you can use available WiFi networks to make and receive calls. This is ideal if you live anywhere with a poor mobile signal.

Data Speeds

iD Mobile piggybacks off Three’s mobile network, so you’ll get a good download speed of around 25Mbps. This is the second-fastest of all the network operators, with first-placed EE offering an impressive 44Mbps and third-placed Vodafone marginally behind at 21.6Mbps.

In practice, this means you’ll be able to download and stream lots of content without fear of buffering.

iD Mobile App

Like many other mobile providers, iD Mobile has an app that you can download from the Apple App Store, Google Play, or the Huawei App Gallery.

The app has several features which will make managing your account on the go easy. Here’s what you can do via the app:

  • Change your plan.
  • Check your data allowance and balance.
  • Set bill capping limits.
  • Buy data boosters.
  • Manage services such as roaming.

Early Upgrades

If you have a contract plan that’s nearing its end, you could be eligible for an early upgrade. This also applies if you’ve been on a sim-only plan for more than six months.

The easiest way to find out if you can upgrade early is to check your iD Mobile app, which will highlight your eligibility.

With iD Mobile, you can use your data, minutes and texts in 50 European destinations which include: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, and Spain. However, roaming is subject to iD Mobile’s fair usage policy, which limits the amount of time your roaming privileges are valid for.

Essentially, iD Mobile just want to make sure that customers are using the service in the spirit it was intended. It means that if you roam more than you use your phone in the UK over a four month period, you’ll be charged extra. These additional charges apply to your minutes, texts, and data use:

  • 3.2p per minute.
  • 1p per text.
  • 0.25p per MB.

About iD Mobile

As an MVNO, iD Mobile uses Three’s mobile network, which provides 4G coverage across 99.8% of the UK. So, unless you happen to be in one of the areas not covered, you shouldn’t have any issues with connectivity.

iD Mobile also offers a huge choice of packages. Whether you’re after a new or particular handset or need a specific amount of data, the variety of sim-only and pay as you go packages means you’re sure to find one that fits your budget.

Also, don’t forget that with iD Mobile you’ll be able to rollover your unused data and, if your data usage increases, you can simply add more on at an extra cost.

iD Mobile Customer Service

iD Mobile’s approach to customer care isn’t to everyone’s taste, with help and support only available online. As it stands, there’s a chatbot facility and an automated phone line. Otherwise, help is available from the iD Community, which works in a similar way to giffgaff in that community members provide much of the advice.

If you prefer to speak to a real person or someone actually employed by iD Mobile, you’re likely to find this type of customer care frustrating. Currently, iD Mobile scores just 3.6 out of 5 on independent review site Trustpilot with most negative comments related to lack of consumer service.

Our iD Mobile Review

If you’re after flexibility and a choice of plans, iD Mobile has lots to offer. The fact that you can rollover unused data and roam in 50 countries is also a real advantage. You also get lots of useful features such as WiFi calling and the ability to tether your phone to other devices to get them online.

However, while iD Mobile has its fans, there are also customers who struggle with the lack of customer service. There are also reports of poor network service despite using the Three network.

iD Mobile pros iD Mobile cons
✔️Data rollover ❌Customer service is online only
✔️Flexible plans with lots of choice ❌Dizzying array of deals makes it hard to find the best option
✔️Student discount and special offers, such as free Apple Music available ❌Download speed slow than first-placed EE
✔️Roaming in 50 destinations included ❌5G not available on all phone deals
