Could Facebook shut down for Earth Hour?

Green blogs are buzzing with news of an internet campaign to get social networking site Facebook to shut down for 60 minutes on March 26 as part of Earth Hour.

Excitement is building on green blogs such as Ecorazzi where a staff writer outlined a request sent to Facebook by "Toronto resident and Earth Hour enthusiast" Angie Bird.

Though Ecorazzi did point out the difficulties involved in such a scheme and highlighted the fact that Facebook has yet to reply, several other blogs have also picked up on the story.

Hitzin features Angie Bird's video appeal to Facebook and its founder Mark Zuckerberg, and the campaign has also been picked up by media outlets The Toronto Star and The Social Times.

Now in its fourth year Earth Hour is an international movement that aims to raise awareness of climate change by encouraging officials and residents around the world to turn off their lights for one hour from 8:30pm local time on March 26. In previous years, monuments such as the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State Building have dimmed their lights as part of the campaign.
