Our Top Picks

While it would be lovely to snuggle up under a blanket and stay indoors all day when the temperature drops, little ones have energy that needs to be used up. If you don’t want your house to resemble a rubbish tip at the end of the day, it’s important to pull on some weather-appropriate clothes and get outside for some fresh air.

A snowsuit is a useful piece of kit in winter, as it’s designed to keep warmth in and rain out from head to toe. As babies and toddlers can’t walk for long periods of time, their body heat can drop quite dramatically when they’re sitting, or lying down, in a buggy or pram. Dress them in a simple coat and you risk complaints of cold legs and it’s only a matter of time before this escalates into tears and a full-blown tantrum.

From all-in-ones with integrated mittens to options with faux fur linings and double zips for ease of dressing, there’s a huge variety of baby snowsuits to choose from. We’ve rounded up the best options to suit all budgets including ones from Sainsbury’s, Asda, JoJo Maman Bebe and more.

How we tested

With the help of a one-year-old and a 10-week old, we tested the snowsuits in frosty and sub-zero conditions in the depths of winter. Each was worn for a trip to the park as well as for a weekend activity like a farm visit or a garden centre, to ensure it kept a baby warm and comfortable for hours. We also tested each one for flexibility and ease of getting it on, making sure that the little one’s movement wasn’t restricted and that we were able to dress them up and leave the house without drama.

With a cosy faux fur lining, a water-resistant coating and a rich, slightly shiny colour, this quilted snowsuit is just as lovely to look at as it is warm inside. We especially loved the trim on the rolled up cuffs and around the face, which, along with the ears on the hood, made our 10-week-old tester look like a cuddly teddy bear.

Pulling it on was a breeze as the zip is satisfyingly chunky, making for a good surface area to grip. And the icing on the cake is that it’s made from planet-friendly fabric. The outer shell is 100 per cent recycled nylon, the lining is 100 per cent recycled polyester and the lightweight padding is made from plant-based material.

This little number was one of the warmest we tested. The fleece lining was soft, bouncy and super plush, and meant we had no need to use a buggy footmuff because our tester was cosy enough in this alone. We liked the elasticated ankles and found that our toddler tester was able to walk and climb stairs easily in it, before taking full advantage of its smooth polyester material to whizz down slides, multiple times.

As for the design, can you ever have enough leopard print in your life? We received at least a couple of compliments with every wear of this wild Tu snowsuit.

Fit for a princess, this snowsuit is by Rachel Riley, a kidswear brand that has dressed several of the younger members of the royal family. The soft pink hue radiates warmth, while the faux fur trim adds a touch of luxury. It’s padded without being restrictive and the double zips make it easy to pull it on and off.

Whether we were out for a long walk in cold weather or in and out of shops, the tester stayed comfortable and complaint-free, which is testament to its excellent breathability. It’s not cheap, but you’ll feel special when pushing a baby dressed in such a top-quality snowsuit.

Tu grey penguin pramsuit

  • Material: Polyester, cotton
  • Colorways: Grey
  • Why we love it
    • Super soft
    • Easy to put on
  • Take note
    • Not waterproo

This is, by far, the snowsuit that earned us the most compliments during walks and outings to the park. It features fluffy grey faux fur and a white tummy that transforms a baby into a little penguin. Lots of passers-by asked us where it was from – and several were surprised when we said it cost £22 at Sainsbury’s, as they expected it to be more expensive. The faux fur is very plush, but it’s lined with cotton, which keeps it breathable. Zips on each side mean this is one of the easiest suits to get in and out of. We liked that the material was flexible, which made it easy for our mini tester to move around. Our little tester appreciated the soft feel of the faux fur, and enjoyed stroking the material while he was sitting in his stroller. The suit is currently only available in sizes under six months (which come with in-built booties to protect tiny toes) but stock is expected in larger sizes soon.

  • Material : 100 per cent polyester outer and padding
  • Colourways : Orange, navy, grey, green, Disney Dumbo
  • Why we love it
    • Cosy fleece lining and faux fur trim add a touch of luxury

George at Asda clothing has a reputation for quality, style and value, and this navy snowsuit did not disappoint. It’s incredibly soft and warm, with a cosy borg fleece lining that kept our little one snug and comfortable in even the coldest weather. The faux fur trim on the hood added a touch of luxury, and the shower-resistant fabric helped protect against the elements.

The attention to detail was impressive, from the sturdy zippers, that made it easy to dress the baby and get out the door, to the snug fit. It’s a reliable and affordable choice that looks a lot more expensive than £17.

Toastie by name and toasty by nature — we were very impressed by the snug Sherpa-lined hood of this thickly padded all-in-one. We would love to have such comfort around our own head to trap in all the heat on the chilliest of days, and actually felt quite envious of the mini testers when they were bundled up in this.

Getting them into it was a joy thanks to the double zip. And if you’ve ever struggled to put mittens on a young child or reason with them to stop chucking them out of the stroller every five seconds, you’ll love that the long cuffs can be rolled over and used as mittens. You can choose from a 10 different colours and prints, including animal print, and we think it’d be durable enough to pass down through siblings when eventually outgrown.

Polarn O. Pyret waterproof shell fleece lined kids overall

best baby snowsuits indybest Polarn O. Pyret waterproof shell fleece lined kids overall
  • Best: Baby snowsuit for durability
  • Size range : 2 years - 6 years
  • Material: Polymide with PU coating, recycled polyester
  • Colourways: Black
  • Why we love it
    • Extremely water resistant and long-lasting
  • Take note
    • Not available in newborn size

Waterproof ratings are measured in millimetres and indicate the amount of water pressure a fabric can withstand. That means a snowsuit with a decent waterproof rating of 5,000mm will endure 5m of water bearing down on it before it starts to leak. This Polarn O’Pyret snowsuit has a waterproof rating of 12,000mm, which means it could be worn all day in torrential downpours and never let a drop of water in.

Extra details to further protect against wind and rain include a detachable hood, a storm flap around the front of the face and tapered seams. Even if their wellies let in water, it won’t be getting close to the skin on their legs. We loved the 360 degree reflective tape around the sleeves and the bottom of the legs, which gave us peace of mind when playing out after dark.

JoJo Maman Bebe purple bird floral waterproof cosy all-in-one

best baby snowsuits indybest JoJo Maman Bebe purple bird floral waterproof cosy all-in-one
  • Best: Baby snowsuit for puddle jumping
  • Size range : 12 months - 3 years
  • Material: 100 per cent recycled polyester
  • Colourways : Navy woodland, purple floral bird
  • Why we love it
    • The vibrant bird and floral print is gorgeous
  • Take note
    • Not available in infant sizes

It’s important to note that this is more of a puddlesuit than a snowsuit, as it’s been extensively tested in wet weather but not in snow. That said, it does have a beautifully soft lining, and it was easily able to keep our toddler warm on a freezing day.

The bird and flower print was a big hit with our one year old tester, who smiled at this on sight. None of the other suits got the same reaction. We also liked that the vibrancy of the suit makes it easy to spot our child in a crowded environment.

Kidly fleece-lined puddle suit

best baby snowsuit indybest Kidly fleece-lined puddle suit
  • Best: Value for money
  • Size range: 12 months - 5 years
  • Material: 100 per cent recycled polyester
  • Colourways: Pine green, grape purple, squash orange, cornflower blue
  • Why we love it
    • There’s a cosy fleece lining throughout
  • Take note
    • Size up as these run on the smalle side

Made for outdoor adventures in rain, snow or wind, we can’t get over the extraordinarily good value of this puddle suit. While it’s primarily made to protect little ones from splashes, the fact that it’s fleece-lined makes it suitable for all temperatures. Touch the lining and you’ll find it strokably soft, which we imagine feels lovely next to your tot’s skin. It will stay that way during the rain, as it has an impressive 12,000mm waterproof rating, meaning kids can sit down or wade in water without feeling damp.

It’s available in several feel-good colours, such as oat or pine and can be passed down to multiple siblings. We just wish it came in smaller sizes to keep small babies cozy and dry too.

The White Company quilted pramsuit

best baby snowsuit indybest The White Company quilted pramsuit
  • Best: Baby snowsuit with a soft lining
  • Size range : 0 months - 24 months
  • Material: 100 per cent nylon shell, 100 per cent polyester lining, 100 per cent polyester wadding
  • Colourways : Grey, navy, pink
  • Why we love it
    • It looks like a luxury choice

The White Company’s quilted pramsuit seamlessly blends comfort and elegance, turning every stroll into a fashion statement. Its traditional quilted design exudes luxury like a designer handbag, but it’s far from high maintenance as you can machine wash it to keep it looking its best.

As soon as we felt the butter soft material of this quilted pramsuit, we fell in love. The outside is smooth and frictionless and utterly huggable, while there’s sherpa lining inside the mittens, feet and hood. All of this comfort doesn’t come at the expense of sustainability either. In fact, it was one of the most eco-friendly suits we tested, thanks to the use of pre- and post-consumer recyclable polyesters that decrease the need for new non-renewable resources, and therefore reduce overall energy usage and CO2 emissions.

Liewood lin baby snowsuit

best baby snowsuits indybest Liewood lin baby snowsuit
  • Best: Baby snowsuit for sustainability
  • Size range : 0 months - 24 months
  • Material : 100 per cent polyester outer, thermolite ecomade bionic finish wadding
  • Colourways : Pecan, dark rosetta
  • Why we love it
    • Extremely warm thanks to thermal wadding
  • Take note
    • It’s quite expensive

Reduced from £199, this was the most expensive suit we tested, but you’re paying for the cost of raw materials that go into making it. For example, it’s not lined with your regular fleece. Instead it has wadded Thermolite ecomade padding to keep youngsters extra warm and comfy on cold winter days. We can imagine it feels like wearing a duvet, and we’re very jealous that it’s not available in adult sizes.

If you’re one of those families that believes there’s no bad weather, just bad clothing, you’ll love the excellent protection it offers from both the cold and the rain with an impressive 12,000 mm waterproof rating. You’re also paying for convenience as this snowsuit makes getting out of the house easy. The full-length zip made it quick to get our toddler dressed, and the foot stirrups kept their trousers from riding up. Plus, the mittens are attached to the snowsuit, so there’s no chance of them getting lost.

Jo Jo Maman Bebe bird waterproof fleece-lined all-in-one

best baby snowsuit sainsburys tu clothing waterproof uk
  • Best: Baby snowsuit for style
  • Size range: 9-12 months to 3-4 years
  • Material: 100 per cent recycled polyester and 100 per cent recycled fleece
  • Colourways: Purple
  • Why we love it
    • Vibrant colourway
    • Plush fleece lining
  • Take note
    • It may com up large

This is a really stylish option from JoJo Maman Bebe that brings brightness to even the cloudiest and foggiest of days. With a bird and flower print and a vibrant purple colour, there was no danger of losing our two-year-old tester in the park.

The fleece lining is very plush – noticeably more dense to look at than other snowsuits. Sizing is on the larger side, so there’s a chance this beautifully constructed garment could last you two winters. We liked the peak hood, as it meant we could pull it over our tester’s head to protect their face from the elements in sub-zero temperatures. The sleeves also come down long to cover a baby’s hands, which is very useful if you have a little one that doesn’t enjoy wearing gloves.

Does your baby kick off their blankets in the park? That will cease to be a concern when they’re dressed in this chic pramsuit, which is made to be shown off. With a fleece lining and faux-fur trim around the hood, it feels as premium as it looks.

This will look just as good on the slopes of Aspen and Klosters as it will while a child is sitting in their buggy getting pushed around a suburban playground. There’s no need to worry about the white colour staying white either, since it can be machine washed.

The verdict: Baby snowsuits

Mixing sustainability, comfort and warmth at a reasonable price, the Mori fleece-lined snowsuit checks all the boxes. It’s available in rich, warming colours and suitable for little ones from birth right up to 18 months of age. However, if you’re on a tight budget this winter, it’s hard to fault the supermarket options from Tu at Sainsbury’s and George at Asda. Both are much warmer than you may imagine and the prints on the outside are adorable, especially if leopard print drives you wild.
