George Osborne has announced that children could be forced to study maths at school until they turn 18.

The Chancellor is conducting a review into whether the UK would benefit from pupils studying maths for longer, amid reports that a quarter of adults leave school with the mathematic abilities of a 10-year-old.

National Numeracy estimates that only 22 per cent of adults have a numeracy level at GCSE grade C or above. It also says being bad at numbers can hit your earning potential as well with people who are below the standard roughly equivalent to a low-level (grade D-G) pass at GCSE in maths suffering a 9 per cent "wage penalty".
