Independent on Sunday's Happy List 2015: Audrey Tibbles, First Aider

It was in 1943 during World War Two that the then 16-year-old Audrey Tibbles enrolled with the British Red Cross as a first aider.

Audrey, of Beckenham, was on duty at the Queen’s Coronation and at Winston Churchill’s funeral, and continued to carry out First Aid duties for the charity until 2000.

At that point, rather than retire after 57 years of service, Audrey continued to play a vital role through supporting the Red Cross’s Fundraising team and serving on Committees.

Now aged 87, Audrey is still committed to raising money by organising the Tombola stall and the Home Made stall at the biennial City Christmas Market, as well as still being a key member of the event Committee.

Audrey is also a consistent top collector during the annual Red Cross Week, and her help as a fundraising volunteer has raised over £55,000.

Her nominator says: “Audrey has given thousands of hours of her time to help those in need. She is incredibly well loved and respected by everyone within the Red Cross City of London.

“She proves that no matter how many years you’ve been working or how old you are, it is never impossible to help others.”
