Proms go cheesy as Wallace unveils his silly symphony

Wallace will unveil My Concerto in Ee, Lad at the Proms (PA)

He invented a pair of Techno Trousers, the Knit-O-Matic and the Snoozatron. Now the multi-talented Wallace is turning his hand to music, with a new commission for the Proms.

The BBC revealed the programme for the eight-week festival and among the pieces is My Concerto in Ee, Lad, attributed to one half of animated duo Wallace & Gromit. The Proms is the world's largest and longest running music festival. This year there will be 76 concerts in the Royal Albert Hall, 12 in Cadogan Hall and four Proms in the park.

Wallace's work is part of the Children's Prom, which in the past has featured the successful Doctor Who and Horrible Histories Proms. Wallace & Gromit creator Nick Park and Aardman Animations have devised a new animation for the Albert Hall.

Among the highlights of the festival, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra will play the complete Beethoven symphony cycle, culminating with the Ninth on the opening night of the Olympics. Celebrated opera singer Bryn Terfel will open the season on 13 July and Joseph Calleja will close it two months later.

Desert Island Discs will celebrate its 70th birthday with a selection of the most requested tunes, presented live from the stage by Kirsty Young. Other highlights include a complete performance of the musical My Fair Lady. The festival will also mark 150 years since the births of Debussy and Delius with works by both composers.
