Most Grindr users back the SNP

The blogger who predicted the Scottish referendum result last year polls Grindr users in Scotland for the general election.

When it comes to election polls, forget YouGov and Ipsos Mori - a blogger in Scotland has been polling Grindr users ahead of the general election to see who they intend to vote for.

Tom Court, who lives in Edinburgh, asked over 1,000 people on the gay dating app which party they were going to vote for on 7 May.

He got 436 responses. Of these, 196 users specified a political party.

The results show that the majority of respondents (61.73%) said that they would vote for the SNP.

Labour got the second-largest share of the vote, with 11.73% of respondents saying they intended to vote for them.

Court set out the full results of the poll on Tumblr, including a breakdown of responses from users who did not pick any of the political parties:

This is not the first time Court has polled Grindr users. Last September before the Scottish referendum, he approached random users and asked whether they thought Scotland should become independent.

The results he got were surprisingly accurate, with 54% of users for No versus 46% for Yes (the actual referendum showed a 55%-45% split in favour of staying in the union).

Speaking to the Independent, Court says that he decided to poll users about the general election because of his success last year with the Scottish referendum.

"I think we can reasonably extrapolate that Grindr is the only polling location that you can truly rely on.

“I couldn't entirely randomise it – mostly I'd just try to get everyone who showed up within a 10-kilometre radius of me.

“Admittedly, when presented with multiple choices, my fingers may be drawn to names like 'CoverMeInCum'. I hope that didn't pollute the data.”

He thinks that leader Nicola Sturgeon is the reason why the SNP has done so well in the poll.

“I'm sure Nicola Sturgeon's perceived "fierceness" is a factor with the Grindr demographic.

“I haven't looked at many non-Grindr polls – they can't possibly match up – but I understand that they show similar levels of SNP support.”
