Harmony Korine the unlikely director to give spring break films their big break

One of the recurring jokes in the ever-quotable Arrested Development was one of the sitcom's characters shouting "Spring Break, whoooo" and lifting her shirt.

It's funnier if you've seen it, but still it gives you an idea of what most concepts of American students' spring holiday is like. Young, good-looking Americans drinking too much and causing havoc in resorts like Daytona Beach. A glossier version of What Happens In Kavos…

From the 1960 coming-of-age hit Where The Boys Are, to modern greats such as, um, Piranha 3D and Spring Break Shark Attack, spring break hasn't caught much of a break on screen. Perhaps because beer pong and nudity don't for Elia Kazan make.

But that's about to change. Last week a new trailer for the latest film by Harmony Korine, who wrote the controversial Kids, was released, suggesting some long-awaited edgier spring break fare.

Spring Breakers, produced by new mini-mogul Megan Ellison, stars ex-Disney starlets Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez, and James Franco as a dreadlocked gold-toothed gangster. Nominated for a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, it certainly looks like it could put 1965 spring-break classic How to Stuff a Wild Bikini in its place...
