Tuesday and Wednesday's highlights offer a major conference for game developers in San Francisco, a Chopin exhibit for the composer's 200th anniversary in Paris, the biggest tourism fair in the world in Berlin,' Lucian Freud's works in Paris as well as the first XGames in Europe, among other events.

The Game Developers Conference (GDC) is the world's largest industry-only gaming event. More than 17,000 professionals are expected to gather at the GDC in 2010. The event aims to heighten the awareness of gaming around the world and encourages industry members to form local and global ties with other members in the game development community. In 2010 there will be over 400 lectures, panels, tutorials and round-table discussions covering the diverse sectors of games - including gaming consoles, handheld devices, cell phones, and of course online and computer games. The event also explores future developments in the field of gaming.

Chopin's 200th anniversary exhibition

For the bicentennial of Frederic (Fryderyk) Chopin's birth, many cities are paying tribute to one of the best-known composers of romantic music in the world with hundreds of events organized throughout 2010 and Paris is a key one with concerts at Cité de la Musique as well as an exhibit, recitals at Salle Pleyel and in the Luxembourg Gardens over the summer.

ITB Berlin

The largest travel fair in the world welcomed 179,000 visitors last year, from 187 countries. Summits on social media and travel, "Aviation Day" and "Hospitality Day" are likely to provide an insight into news and trends in the industry. Turkey is this year's official partner country.

Lucian Freud retrospective

Acclaimed British painter Lucian Freud, Sigmund Freud's grand-son, is having his first major exhibition in Paris in over 20 years featuring fifty large paintings along with photographs and graphic works showing his London studio. Lucian Freud. The studio is organised around the theme of the artist's studio, a key theme in the artist's compositions. Aged 88, Freud's distinctiveness resides in his nude portraits and his depiction of the flesh, he even refers to his studio as "the painter's laboratory".

Extreme sports: Winter X Games Europe

The Winter X Games come to EUrope for the first time, and the French ski resort of Tignes will be hosting. ESPN, the creators of the X Games, have teamed up with French TV network Canal+. Superpipes and slopestyle competitions for skiers and snowboarders will be accompanied by a snowmobile freestyle demo. While ESPN and Canal+ are expected to carry the majority of televised events, with some footage available from the official site, those wishing to spectate from the snowy slopes are advised to check Tignes' Winter X Games site.
