The 2012 presidential election saw a four per cent drop in voters, from 58.23 per cent in 2008 to just 54.87 per cent.

According to a poll by Real Clear Politics, 15 per cent of voters are not going to be voting for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton on 8 November.

To date, six per cent are planning to vote for the Libertarian party nominee Gary Johnson, and 2.2 per cent for Green party nominee, Jill Stein.

Third party voters are an indication of the growing apathy in the US towards the two traditional political parties.

The problem with third and fourth party voting is that while both Clinton and Trump might lose a few per cent of votes, the candidates are already incredibly close – with the democratic candidate ahead only by scant few points.

Certain ‘battle ground’ states like Florida and Texas, which are likely to sway the overall results, have the two main candidates neck-to-neck with points.
